Please note selections will be based on the latest available UK rankings at the selection date, and therefore results from the British Championships and other events that fall before 16th April but have not yet been included in the U.K. Rankings will NOT count towards rankings for selection purposes.

Team selection is based on results at the event.

The only grounds for appeal will be either a material inaccuracy in the rankings used for selection or the incorrect application of this stated selection policy. Fencers are responsible for reporting ranking inaccuracies to the specific weapon ranking co-ordinator.  Appeals will be decided by the Board, whose decision shall be final.

Cadet & Junior Commonwealth Championships Date: 2018
Selection: T-6months

Automatic selection for those:

- achieving a Top 20 placing in the ranking lists on selection date, provided they are in the Top 25% of the Ranking List (excluding those with no points); and/or

- selected to represent GBR in the 2017-18 season

up to the maximum team size

The Board can apply discretionary selection up to the maximum team size where there are insufficient automatic selections

Team selection is based on results at the event

Please note that the Board reserves the right to decide not to select/send a team for any event, regardless of fencers meeting the selection criteria.  Selection of all teams is the responsibility of the Board; they may, however, request input from weapon-specific coaches.

When applying discretionary selection, it is important to note that rankings are taken into account but are not the sole criteria.  For example, when selecting for the Senior 5 Nations, senior rankings will be considered as a guide, as will junior and cadet rankings for the younger fencers.  Other factors may also be taken into account. In particular the selection panel may compare all potential candidates on the basis of the following:

- The number and quality of competitions entered

- Past performance for Wales

- Results of Welsh Closed Championships

- Future potential

To be selected fencers must first be a UK Citizen and hold a UK passport. You must also be able to represent GBR at an international level. You then have a right to represent Welsh fencing provided that:

  1. You are a member of Welsh fencing
  2. You were born in Wales
  3. OR you have a parent born in Wales;
  4. OR you have a grandparent born in Wales;
  5. OR you are normally resident in Wales and have been for a period of time (length depends on age and connection)
  6. Fencers must also show a commitment to fencing competitively by attending at least 5 events outside of the welsh regional events (these can include LPJS, Elite Epee, U14 events, Newham foil, cadet BRC etc)

This year the School Games at Loughborough University will run slightly differently this year, with a change in the number of fencers selected..

This year, three fencers will be selected for each weapon.

The Selection Policy for this event hs been agreed between the Home Nations, and is outlined below:

  • the top two places will be taken from those in the top 75% of the Junior rankings;
  • selection for the 3rd place will be made by selectors in each home country.  Wales intend to base this on junior and cadet rankings.

Welsh Fencing will contact (by email) those who achieve automatic selection, in mid-March. Notification of the third fencer and non-travelling reservese will follow in April, final date to be confirmed.

This policy covers selection for Welsh Fencing Senior teams for Commonwealth Fencing Championships, 5 Nations and Winton Cup events. Selection for Junior, Schools or Student teams are NOT covered by this policy. This policy replaces all previous versions of Welsh Fencing Senior Selection Policy.

Please see below the Selection Criteria for the various Junior events:

Cadet Winton

This is a national inter-region event, held annually. This event is often used to trial fencers who have shown potential and fencers need not be selected on the basis of any particular ranking list (although this will often be the case).

Selection in future will be a balance of fencers who show development potential and more senior colleagues. This change will give opportunity for ‘possibles’ to gain experience at an Intermediate level, and to increase the depth of talent available for Senior event selection.

Given that this is a regional event (rather than a National event), fencers who might in principle be eligible for Welsh team selection, are able to fence for other regions if they are resident outside Wales.
