In order to make the Welsh Youth League easier to understand, Welsh Fencing are updating the points system for the ranking scheme, to begin in January 2019. This simpler system will enable parents and fencers to get used to the ranking process, and will be used as a tool for selection boards when selecting relevant teams such as Challenge Wratislavia.

HOW POINTS WILL BE CALCULATED

The points for a competition are calculated by multiplying (Number of fencers in competition) x (Age group multiplier) x (Position multiplier)
The Number of fencers in the competition refers to the number of fencers in the relevant category, that sign in and start the competition (will include any non-finishers)
The Age group multipliers will be 1 for U11 and U12 competitions; 2 for U13 and U14 competitions; 3 for U13 and U16 competitions.
The position multipliers will remain the same as follows:

Note that there are steps in the position multiplier table at 3rd/5th, 8th/9th and 16th/17th rewarding the fencer who succeeds in winning more DE fights. The effect of this is that a fencer might earn more points for a 12th place in a large competition like the BYC U14 than they would by coming 3rd in a relatively small LPJS.

AGE CRITERIA

If you ‘fence up’ an age category at a competition, then points will be awarded with the relevant multiplier to that age group. If you enter more than one category at an event you may receive points for both, but it will only count as one event in your events totals (you will still need to compete in 5 separate events to qualify for the Poland trip). Only your top 6 results count towards your final total.

CADET BRC POINTS ALLOCATION

In line with British Fencing changing their point allocation system, Welsh Fencing will be applying a multiplier of 100 for points achieved at BRC U17 events for our U15 rankings.
This means that whatever BF award, you will be x100 for the Youth League.
We want to encourage attendance to these events and feel that an U15 gaining points at a cadet competition is worth recognising - so points will appear on the U15 rankings if you place in the top 80% in line with the BF system.
